The 2004 St. Louis Cardinals continued
their hot second half push by taking the powerhouse 2013 Pittsburgh
Pirates to a 5th game in their NLDS series, and coasting to a 10-2 win
to earn a berth in the NLCS. The game was an anti-climatic finish to
what had been a wild and evenly played series.
The
teams traded 5-1 wins in games one and two in Pittsburgh. The series
shifted to St. Louis and saw two ejections in game three, eventually won
by the Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth on Albert Pujols' two-out,
run scoring single. The Cardinal run broke a 3-3 tie and came after two
out and none on, when Tony Womack singled and Larry Walker walked to set
the stage for Albert.
The
Pirates erased a 5-4 seventh inning deficit in game four with 3 runs
and it ended that way, 7-5 Pirates returning the series to Pittsburgh.
The
Cardinals pounded out 13 hits, including two homers by Mr. Pujols, to
back Chris Carpenter and three relievers in the game five win.
